On The Side

Written by Alice Bowman

Arthur is a socially awkward yet outspoken young man who has just returned home from Oxford University to his small council house in the Northwest. He's glad to be back. Or is he?

He is finding being back home can be hard when you feel you don’t fit in. To make matters worse his mum Jodie has bagged him a job in a dingy burger van. Not ideal.  He meets a girl that shares his blunt sense of humour but there is more to her than meets the eye. After reluctantly giving her a free box of chips, he becomes interested, but soon learns she has customers of her own... But when things get tough how do people on the side come together?

A northern working-class comedy sharing people’s lived experiences and celebrating that whatever happens in life we’ve always got each other.

A message from the cast

"Hiya, we are the On The Side team, made up of northern actors directed by a southerner. Together we want to create a light-hearted comedy that gives a good representation of current working-class life, bringing real life stories to the stage dramatizing them in hope to convey a convincing yet theatrical comedy. Our company consists of down-to-earth, zany and creative commoners all being whipped into shape by a southerner. Someone’s got to do it! Through our regional background, we have devised and written a script with language we feel is relatable to a northern audience and with our director's guidance to bring these ideas to life in a fresh new way. Ta’ra kidda and see you there xxx "
